Wood County Recognized with Award as “Best Weekend Road Trip” in Texas
     Wood County, Texas [9/12/2023] — The Wood County Economic Development Commission (WCEDC) announced today that Wood County has been recognized with a prestigious award as a premier tourist destination for other Texans.
      Official Best of America recognized Wood County as the “Best Weekend Road Trip” for other Texans, and memorialized the honor with a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCx3iOJdZeg&feature=youtu.be

    "We are ecstatic to receive this award which is a reflection of all the hard work put forth by the people who live in Wood County,” said Christine Thomas, Executive Director of the WCEDC. “Everyone, residents, and businesses alike, has played a role, whether through their tax dollars or volunteerism at the many exciting events that we host throughout the year.
    “It’s also important to recognize the businesses in Wood Country which have done a great job of welcoming visitors, in turn making Wood County a regular destination for people from Dallas and Houston and all points in between,” she added.
     “These are exciting times. We look forward to building upon the recognition, doing everything we can to maintain our attraction to the tourist community.”

Be sure and visit the Winnsboro Historical Museum:  The museum is open from 1-4pm on Fridays and 10am-4pm on Saturdays.     PUBLIC NATURE WALKING TRAIL

Located at Jim Hogg Park, 175 Gov Hogg Pkwy, Quitman, TX 75783.   There's a wonderful 1/2 mile walking trail through the woods; pet friendly.  covers 23 acres and includes a walking trail, gazebo, sensory garden, shade garden, a waterwise garden, numerous rose and flower beds. 

    Includes the Stinson House, The Stinson House is available for rental for functions such as weddings, receptions, teas, luncheons, and parties.

LAKE BOB SANDLIN PUBLIC WALKING TRAIL

There are six mapped trails to choose from:  a short 0.6 mile loop trail and a longer choices up to 6.3 miles.

The park covers 639.8 acres of land on the northern shore Lake Bob Sandlin about 10 miles southwest of Mount Pleasant.  Enjoy hand-curated trail maps, along with reviews and photos from nature lovers like you. Ready for your next hike or bike ride? Explore one of 6 easy hiking trails in Lake Bob Sandlin State Park that are great for the whole family. Looking for a more strenuous hike? We've got you covered, with trails ranging from 26 to 282 feet in elevation gain. Whatever you have planned for the day, you can find the perfect trail for your next trip to Lake Bob Sandlin State Park.

MINEOLA NATURE PRESERVE (click here)

Offers a choice of 5 hiking trails, from 1.6 to 7.8 miles in elevation gain from 49 to 180 feet. Trails are is great for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through April.  This are lovely and shaded hikse that leads from the main area of Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine Trail. The trail leads to a viewpoint on the Doctor John Thomas bridge and the trail ends at the Sabine River. For those who wish to extend their route, there are many other trail connections in this area.

The Wood County, Texas - Ruck for the Fallen, is scheduled for May 17th, at 0730hrs in Jim Hogg Park in Quitman, Texas!  For event questions, contact  (903) 315-7789, woodcountytxruck@gmail.com

​The purpose of the Ruck for the Fallen is to honor sacrifice of service members who gave their lives defending American freedoms. The 2025 ruck will be May 17th. ALL proceeds will go to the Veteran Non-Profit – Boot Campaign. https://bootcampaign.org/

The 5Ws are the following:
Who: Patriotic Americans
What: Walking, Running, or Rucking
When: 17 0730hrs MAY 2025 (military date/time) aka May 17th, 2025, at 7:30am (civilian date/time)
Where: Governor Jim Hogg Park, Quitman, Texas
Why: To remember the men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Participants may choose to run/walk the race with or without the ruck participation, however only Ruck participants will be eligible for podium awards.
The following categories are eligible for podium awards:
• Fastest time Male and Female 5K Ruck
• Fastest time Male and Female 10K Ruck
• Fastest time Battle Buddy 5K Ruck (Two participants must start together and finish within 10 meters of each other)
• Fastest time Fire Team 5K Ruck (Four participants must start together and finish within 10 meters of each other)
Rucks must weigh at least 35lbs and will be weighed prior to start and immediately after crossing the finish line.
