Ft. Sherman History Days
Just north of Winnsboro is a Texas Parks and Wildlife state park, Ft. Sherman, at Lake Bob Sandlin, operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife.
On Saturday, Februrary 23, 2019, the public was invited to experience history at Ft. Sherman History Days.
Visitors experienced the early 1800s from authentic fur trappers, spinsters, settlers and Buffalo Soldiers. Fort Sherman was commissioned in 1838 and was essential to the founding of local communities, such as Mount Pleasant, Pittsburg, Mount Vernon and Winnsboro. This event was good for all ages. Despite the weather earlier in the day, the afternoon was filled with scattered sunshine and winds throughout the tall bellowing pines and hardwoods. All displays were inside the local cabin shelters. Many brought their whole family out to sit by the campfire and learn about the beginnings of East Texas as we know it today. The schedule included various demonstrations, a ranger-led historical hike, and a cemetery tour."
Entry fees into the park are $4, for anyone 13 and older, and children 12 and under are free.” Location Park Map (click here)
