KAPUT® SCIMETRICS, INC. WITHDRAWS TEXAS APPLICATION TO POISON WILD PIGS

MET WITH HEATED RESISTANCE OF CONCERNS ABOUT ECO-BALANCE OF NATURE & POISONING HUMANS

[25APRIL2017 | East Texas]

UPDATE:

Scimetrics, the manufacturers of Kaput(r) warfarin-based wild pig poison (where wild bigs or other animals bleed to death internally, turns fat blue) formally WITHDREW their application on 24April2017 to use the warfarin based wild pig poison in our state.

The potential environmental eco-balance disaster met with much widespread resistance from Texans in cities and rural areas. Fears escalated that  (1) it takes 4-7 days for the fat to turn blue, warning hunters the pig has poison in it; and if a hunter shot and harvested the meat on day 3, it would be disaster for consumers

(2) deployment of the poison required a logistical nightmare, from 90-120 program, including t-posted traps or straps to trees and bushes, with 8-10 pound lids NOT lift-able by other wildlife, near streams, yet the EPA conditional registration said not to get near a water source, and it also required conditioning (training) wild pigs to eat from the feeder and then switch out the bait with the poison after a given time, and frequent field checks.

Read what the fuss is all about, below, in an Apirl 5, 2017 posting. In that news article, there's a link to a PDF file.  It's a dossier (that's a research paper) of the EPA Warning label, company info, and collection of news articles warning about the dangers of Kaput.

PREFACE TO PRESS RELEASE

Here's the company's Texas withdrawal press release!  Now we need it withdrawn in all 50 states, state by state or by having the EPA retract/cancel their product registration.  Their press release is so misleading, It's not about conservation, its about conservation through POISONING, and that is NOT the best answer.

PRESS RELEASE

"Scimetrics Ltd Corp withdraws Texas registration of Kaput Feral Hog Bait

WELLINGTON, Colo., April 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Scimetrics Ltd Corp has withdrawn its registration of Kaput Feral Hog Bait in the state of Texas. We have received tremendous support from farmers and ranchers in the State of Texas, and have empathy for the environmental devastation, endangered species predation, and crop damage being inflicted there by a non-native animal. However, under the threat of many lawsuits, our family owned company cannot at this time risk the disruption of our business and continue to compete with special interests in Texas that have larger resources to sustain a lengthy legal battle."

What perpetuated my writing today is the published Austin American-Statesman April 5 article “On the defense, Sid Miller regrets using ‘feral hog apocalypse’ comment” by Asher Price.

In response, on Thursday morning, April 6, The Texas Department of Agriculture’s official Facebook site posts self-praising applauding commentary on their Ag Commissioner, that it was “a very well-balanced article on the feral hog issue that attempts to correct some long-held misconceptions. Journalist Asher Price stuck to the FACTS – not the FUROR. Well done.”

Let’s pause and move not so fast. “Facts” and “truth” are not the same thing from the Price article, and the TDA post is in response to defray flack over the controversy.

Journalist Price wrote, in paraphrasing, that the fat of the feral hog would turn blue hence consumers would know it was a poisoned pig: True statement. However, it takes time to turn blue.  Four to seven days.

Price also wrote that “Miller tells all comers that … ‘hogs poisoned by the bait would not affect deer or quail’ or ‘any other game animal.”

Let's dissect that sentence.  It is a fact that Miller made that statement, but the statement itself is NOT TRUE. Frankly, it’s an untruth. Okay, whether it be on the reporter’s slim research abilities to dig and know the difference between a fact and non-truth, or a Texas-two-step-misstep of Commissioner Miller. So, that’s direct and blunt so why sugar coat it?  This poison kills other wildlife and is toxic to fish and birds.  IT SAYS SO ON THE LABEL.

EPA Warning Label approved

1/3/2017 states, This product

may be toxic to fish, birds and

other wildlife. Dogs and other

predatory and scavenging

mammals and birds might

be poisoned if they feed

upon animals that have

eaten the bait.”

CRITICAL POINT 1.

It is a fact and true that the EPA issued a CONDITIONAL registration on 3 January 2017 to Scimetrics Ltd., Corp, the lone manufacturer. The EPA states the company has “NOT SATISFIED” the “data requirements for storage stability and corrosion characteristics (Guidelines 830.6317 and 830.6320). A one year study is required to satisfy these data requirements. You have 18 months from the date of registration to provide these data.”

The EPA Warning states,
“Do not expose to children, pets, domesticated animals or other non-target wildlife” and “feeders equipped with heavy lids (8-10 pounds)” and “do not apply directly on the ground.”

Commentary.
What hog is going to lift a 8-10 pound lid, after being FIRST “conditioned” for 4 days to eat regular food out of the container, then it is switched with the poisoned, and stick its snout in and be assured to not get any on the ground?

CRITICAL POINT 2.

Environmental warning on the EPA / Company label states
“This product may be toxic to fish, birds and other wildlife. Dogs and other predatory and scavenging mammals and birds might be poisoned if they feed upon animals that have eaten the bait. … do not apply this product directly to water, to areas where surface water is present or intertidal areas below the mean high-water mark. Do not contaminate water when disposing of equipment wash waters.”

So, where’s the wash waters supposed to be disposed? The warnings are clear. "Not near water?" Wood County has over 90 named lakes, 4 county lakes and Lake Fork. Not even the wild animal food chain. If vultures, coyotes, American Bald Eagles, this can upset the balance of nature. Like big “pharma” for Humans, even a controlled use runs risk on nature's balance of the food chain.
Commentary.

“The test results weren’t pretty, he said. Marketed as Kaput Feral Hog Bait, the product is comparable to rat poison — with similar effects. ‘They bleed,’ Campbell said. Internally and externally, usually for a week or more before they die.”

What American Bald Eagle, deer or quail is going to look for blue fatty tissue in a dead feral hog?  What if my friend, Tammy Alexander, east Texas expert hog hunter with kill #24, kills a hog on her rural country property and the hog ate the poison two days ago and the fatty tissue has not turned blue yet?  What if she feeds this poisoned pig meat to her family?

REALLY, this is not a good idea. It's a no-brainer for any one with a lick of common sense. Hunt, trap and keep poison out of our environment.  I am not an environmentalist; but have we not yet learned any lessons from DDT, Agent Orange, Roundup?

I've included a multiple page research dossier on the topic so folks can make REAL TRUE informed decisions.

Read the product label yourself and you decide if this is good for nature, good for Texas.

Feral Hog - Pig Poison  KAPUT(r) Labeling reflects this info

Estimated total program time and steps for one container effecting the area baited and poison:

  • 100-150 days
  • train the wild hogs by conditioning them to eat from a container with and 8-10 pound lid for 4-7 days.
  • "Locate hog feeder in or near probable resting areas for hogs, including brush along streams .." Never mind the label also reads to "do not apply ... to area where surface water is present."
  • Switch out bait to the poison after area showing signs of wild hogs in the area eating the bait food
  • licensed pest control person is required to check the container frequently, at least every 1-4 days.
  • Try to use a fenced in area if available.
  • When dead hogs start showing up in the area, you must check the container every 2- to 4 -day intervals.
  • Then the hog will eat poison and die from massive internal bleeding over the next 4-7 days. The poison will turn the fat in a pig to blue, so humans will know it's a poisoned pig.
  • However, if you kill the hog before it dies or the fat has not had a chance to turn blue, you won't know if you just killed, dressed or cooked a poisoned wild pig.
  • Additionally, American Bald Eagles, deer, quail, other wild life will not get the telegram warning to look out for blue fat in a dead wild pig. Eating the meat from a poisoned pig can kill other wildlife.
  • Also EACH AND EVERY dead wild hog MUST be buried deep enough to where the top is no more than least 18" below the surface of the ground. It must be done right away to avoid scavengers and wildlife eating the poisoned meat.

POISON PROGRAM MATERIALS FOR AT LEAST ONE CONTAINER

  • State approved Kaput license
  • t-posts
  • container with 8-10 pound lid
  • rope to secure to tree or bush
  • regular feed bait 25-50 lbs.
  • poison, estimated at 25 lbs.
  • shovel for burying dead pigs at least deeper than 18"
  • report other dead mammals, birds, fish to State officials
  • chem gloves
  • Use person protective equipment, wash gloves before removing and then as soon possible wash clothes, shoes separately and change clothes, laundry detergent.
  • Fuel for multiple trips over 120-150 days
  • report all other dead wild life in area to state officials

Versus Hunting

  • One gun, hunting license and/or traps
  • One bullet (okay, maybe more if you are a bad shot).
  • One night (okay, maybe 2-7 for traps)
  • Fuel to get to the location and back home
  • Product can be consumed by humans, served at restaurants (if inspected), shipped overseas or used at zoos to feed animals.
